Since 2006, Ramboll has been working on one of our most extensive projects to date for Maersk Oil Qatar. The project involves an offshore field development project called Al Shaheen, located 180 kilometres (110 mi) off the North East coast of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf - this is the highest producing oil field in the region.
Ambitious development plan
In 2005 Maersk Oil initiated an ambitious development plan for Al Shaheen, calling for the drilling of more than 160 production and water injection wells. The project also involved three offshore platform locations, which with production and accommodation facilities have amounted to 15 new platforms in total.
Ramboll was assigned to carry out the brown field design including some modifications to ensure a smooth tie-in between the new platforms and the existing installations. Ramboll set up a dedicated team for this project, and today the team numbers some +130 people working full time for Maersk Oil. The project is executed in a global engineering setup between the offices in Doha, Abu Dhabi, and Chennai.
At the moment, the Al Shaheen field consists of 35 platforms and is of approximately the same size as the Maersk Oil installations in the Danish North Sea. Maersk produces close to 40% of Qatar’s current 800-900,000 barrels per day output.
